Unlucky abalone thief nabbed twice
WC traffic pulled over an abalone trafficker who escaped, only to be caught later with more abalone.
CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town man has been arrested after more than R1 million in abalone was discovered in his car on Sir Lowry's Pass.
He was pulled over by a traffic officer on Thursday, but managed to flee the scene.
But what happened next was pure luck.
The traffic officer was inspecting the suspect's Nissan bakkie and discovered the abalone when the driver fled.
But Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says a few hours later the same traffic officer pulled over a Corsa bakkie on Sir Lowry's Pass with the same driver in the vehicle.
Africa says, "The traffic officer then arrested the driver and passenger in the vehicle".
The man is being held at the Somerset West Police Station.
Last month, police on the West Coast arrested five men for being in the possession of more than 18,000 units of abalone in Atlantis.
