CAPE TOWN - The Manenberg Community Policing Forum says it's saddened and stunned by the murder of an 11-year-old girl.

The child was reported missing on Tuesday and her body discovered in Maitland on Thursday.

Manenberg CPF Kader Jacobs says, "It's really almost a common occurrence within the Manenberg precinct and we're saddened that this one has gone to a point where the little girl actually got killed."

Detectives are now piecing together the exact circumstances surrounding the girl's murder.

A 44-year-old man is in custody in connection with the incident and it's understood he is the victim's uncle.

He was apprehended shortly after her body was discovered in an abandoned building in an industrial area in Maitland.

The police's Tembinkosi Kinana says initial reports indicate the child may have died due to severe head injuries.

At this stage it's a murder case but it's believed the girl was also raped.

The suspect will remain in custody until his court appearance.
