JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma has announced that on Tuesday, he will officially proclaim 7 May election day.
The proclamation means people wanting to register to vote will not be able to after Tuesday next week.
Zuma also formally decided that the day will be a public holiday to allow workers the chance to cast their ballots.
Provincial premiers are now expected to also proclaim the date of the elections locally.
Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj confirmed the proclamation date.
"Elections will be gazetted next Tuesday the 25th of February 2014. According to the Electoral Act, the voters' roll will close on the day the elections are proclaimed."
