JOHANNESBURG - An Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team is preparing to rescue a group of illegal miners trapped in a shaft in Roodepoort on the West Rand.

Details are not yet clear but it's believed four people are stuck underground.

EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe says the Mines Rescue Services are also on the scene.

"EMS is assisting mines rescue and our teams are getting ready to go down."

This week saw extensive operations to rescue trapped miners in two separate shafts in Benoni on Gauteng's East Rand.

Two men died while underground.

On Thursday, police denied allegations that they are failing to respond to the problem in Gauteng.

Experts say the problem will only be solved by catching syndicate leaders and dismantling their operations.

But authorities say they are doing everything they can to tackle the problem.
