Driver jumps into river to avoid arrest

CAPE TOWN - A taxi driver remains at large after trying everything in his power to evade arrest on Wednesday morning.
In a dramatic getaway that unfolded shortly after 8am, the Cape Town driver was chased down by the city's Ghost Squad unit on the N2 highway.
He decided to abandon his vehicle and jump into a river to avoid arrest.
Upon searching the taxi, officers found his licence.
Officials discovered the driver had two double contempt warrants out for his arrest.
The municipality's JP Smith says officers are often subjected to this kind of behaviour.
"I can show you incidents where our vehicles have been smashed by taxi drivers, where they have attempted to drive over our officers and have even dragged our officers alongside the vehicle. It's a reasonably common occurrence. The level of strange behaviour knows no limit."
