Waterkloof lawyer baffled by rearrests
Lawyer Oelof de Meyer says he is waiting for the Department of Correctional Services to respond.
JOHANNESBURG - A lawyer representing two of the so-called Waterkloof Four on Tuesday said he doesn't understand why his clients remain in custody.
Lawyer Oelof de Meyer further says he doesn't understand why his clients are being investigated.
The Correctional Services Department on Sunday rearrested Christoff Bekker and Frikkie du Preez after a video emerged showing them having a party in prison.
It is alleged the two men, who were serving 12-year sentences for the 2001 murder of a homeless man, were drinking alcohol.
De Meyer says he submitted a letter to the department and is now waiting for them to respond.
He says he doesn't want to pre-empt the department and will wait until they make a decision on the fate of his clients before initiating any illegal action.
The lawyer says officials may detain Becker and du Preez for 72 hours while they conduct an investigation.
The department says by Thursday morning, it will be in a position to release the final findings of its probe.
The infamous "Waterkloof Four" were released from prison on parole on Tuesday and received a warm welcome from friends and family.
