CAPE TOWN - The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape has called for a thorough investigation into the provincial government's more than R10 billion consultancy bill.

A report by the Auditor-General shows the province spent R10.3 billion on consultants between April 2008 and March 2011.

The report is expected to be scrutinised in the Provincial Legislature later this week.

The SACP's Masonwabe Sokoyi wants answers.

"We demand a full investigation into who received the tenders of these consultants and what were they doing? Helen Zille is trying to push, questioning the integrity of the Auditor-General."

Meanwhile, Zille has questioned the timing of the report, saying many of the contracts were awarded before the Democratic Alliance (DA) took control of the provincial government in 2009.
