JOHANNESBURG - Residents of Bekkersdal on Gauteng's West Rand have put their plans to illegally occupy land owned by mining company Rand Uranium on hold.

The Greater Westonaria Concerned Residents Association planned to build shacks on land that's already been demarcated by community members.

This is despite the uranium company and the municipality obtaining an interdict preventing the occupation.

The association's Thabang Wesi says they haven't broken the law yet.

"It is just false allegations to say we have erected illegal structures there. That is absolute nonsense. If we had, then the court would send people to remove us."
