JOHANNESBURG - It's believed about 30 illegal miners are trapped underground in an abandoned mine near Benoni on the East Rand.

Emergency services and police are on the scene where an exit point of the mine apparently collapsed leaving the miners trapped underground.

It's still unclear if anyone has been injured.

But ER 24's Werner Vermaak says they hope to enter the mine soon.

"All the emergency services are gathered at the moment waiting for mine rescue services to come and open an access point."

Vermaak says it's not clear who discovered the miners.

"In some areas you can still hear them and speak to them. However, they will have to open the area first to extricate them and find out how many are injured."
