CAPE TOWN - A man arrested in connection with the murder of a Delft girl has allegedly committed suicide, Cape Town police revealed on Friday.

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested on Thursday and placed in custody at the Bellville South police cells.

Siphokuhle Flephu's body was found in a shack at the weekend.

It is believed she was raped before she was murdered.

Meanwhile, another man who was attacked by angry community members shortly after the incident is recovering in hospital.

Authorities say he is not linked to the crime.

Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk says, "It was established this morning that the suspect allegedly committed suicide while in custody. An inquest case was opened for investigation."

A blood stained mattress where the girl was murdered is a gruesome reminder for residents that their children are not safe.

Meanwhile, Delft residents took to the streets earlier on Friday following several incidents of child killings in the area.

Resident Desmond Cloete says the community has had enough.

"We as parents must look after our children all the time, especially the young children.

Siphokuhle will be laid to rest in the Eastern Cape next weekend.
