CAPE TOWN - Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has told EWN Sport that he is glad to see the South African Football Association (Safa) back Gordon Igesund to remain as coach of Bafana Bafana.

Safa yesterday revealed that Igesund would see out his contract in the job but gave no indication if the deal would be renewed.

Hunt says Igesund has done well in the job but is disappointed Safa has not said anything about extending the deal further.

"He's done very well with the team since he's taken over. There has certainly been an improvement since he came into a no-win situation with the qualifying games. I think SAFA have done the right thing, but I think they should have come out today and clarified whether he is staying beyond the end of his contract or not."

Hunt also added that should Safa and Igesund part ways at the end of his contract, the association should employ a local coach rather than look abroad for a replacement.

"It's got to be local, absolutely. I think there will be no improvement if a foreign coach is brought in."

Former Bafana captain Lucas Radebe says Safa's move to retain Igesund is a sign that the association is fully behind the coach.

"I think it's encouraging. He's there to take us forward to the next games, and towards his vision, which is great."
