CAPE TOWN - Legislation must be tightened to ensure those who abuse the elderly are thrown in jail, the Western Cape Older Persons' Forum said on Friday.

It met with Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini this week to discuss the socio-economic problems facing the elderly across the country.

The minister said she was concerned about not only physical abuse, but also the financial manipulation the elderly suffer.

The forum's Alvira Kleinhans says many older people are stripped of their pensions.

"Older persons are kept in families and homes for the sake of their money."
