CAPE TOWN - A memorial service was held on Thursday for a family of five who died when a fire gutted their informal dwellings in Lotus River.

The service took place at Zeekoevlei Secondary School.

The blaze, which destroyed two backyard dwellings, broke out on 5th Avenue in the early hours of Monday morning.

Kirk Jacobs, his parents, older sister and his two-year-old nephew lost their lives in the blaze.

Community member Vincent Carelse says, "This kind of thing has never happened before in the area and people are very traumatised by it."

Several people have lost their lives in shack fires in Cape Town since the beginning of the year.
