CAPE TOWN - As the Mother City gears up to host South Africa's leaders on Thursday for the State of the Nation Address (SONA), politicians are ensuring they will put their best foot forward on the red carpet.

The opening of Parliament has become synonymous with style statements as well as the occasional fashion faux pas.

DA Parliamentary Leader Lindiwe Mazibuko says it is a rare opportunity for politicians to have some fun.

"The spirit of what happens on the red carpet itself is actually very playful and fun. Some people are more stylish than others, but people get to express themselves in a creative way in which politicians aren't usually that free to do."

President Jacob Zuma will deliver his speech at 7pm.
