JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says a record 25.3 million South Africans are registered to vote in the national and provincial elections, which will take place on 7 May.

IEC Chairperson Pansy Tlakula made the announcement in Centurion, north of Pretoria, a short while ago.

She says there's also a record number of young people under the age of 30 who have registered to vote in the upcoming elections.

Tlakula says the IEC recorded more than 1.2 million new registrants at the weekend.

"The results show that we can lay to rest any suggestion that South Africans are apathetic or blasé about our democracy. Twenty years on, the desire to participate in our democratic process burns as brightly as ever."
