CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police are questioning a man in connection with the murder of a 12-year-old girl in Delft.

Police officers were called to the area on Saturday night after community members reportedly cornered a suspect and were beating him up.

Upon further investigating officers were led to a nearby home linked to the man, where they discovered the young girl's body.

Police believe the 12-year-old may have been raped before she was killed.

Spokesperson Andre Traut says the suspect claims he has no knowledge of the incident.

"We have detained this man for questioning and the circumstances are now being investigated."

The Delft Community Policing Forum (CPF)'s Reginald Mart says residents are fed up with crime in the area.

"The community has had enough of all of these rape and murder incidents in the area."

A post mortem will be done soon.
