JOHANNESBURG - Coach Gordon Igesund's tenure as Bafana Bafana head coach can be considered a success, former footballer Helman Mkhalele said on Monday.

Igesund's future is up for debate when he meets with South African Football Authority (Safa) executives on Thursday.

He will discuss the team's failure to advance beyond the group stages of the 2014 Orange African Nations Championship, as well as allegations he tried to improperly influence players over bonuses during the tournament.

Mkhalele says Igesund should be applauded for what he has achieved with the national side.

"In terms of transforming the team, it was a success. I personally thought he would be given more time in terms of making sure that his philosophy as well as his transformation could be completed."

Journalist Mazola Molefe says Safa is in a complicated position when it comes to Igesund.

"If he gets sacked early they might have to pay him out, even though he only has a few months remaining on his contract. If they keep him, they may just decide to let his contract run out without actually renewing it. There's nothing really to play for now except for the friendly against Brazil."
