CAPE TOWN - Family members of a murdered Delft girl on Monday said it will be hard to come to terms with her violent death.

Siphokuhle Flephu's body was discovered in a shack at the weekend.

It is believed the 11-year-old girl was also raped.

A 26-year-old man, believed to be linked to the murder, was attacked by angry community members following the incident.

He is currently under police guard in hospital.

This is the third attack on a child in the area in the past month.

A handful of photographs and few items of clothing is all that is left of the girl who apparently loved playing outside.

Relatives say Flephu will be remembered as a clever girl who enjoyed reading and dreamt of becoming a teacher one day.

The girl's stepmother, Zameka Flephu, who has not left the shack since the news broke, says she is devastated their happy child was killed only 500 metres from their house.

Family friend Nolundi Ralasi has little hope for the other children who have to grow up in the area.

"What has happened is very sad. We don't know what's happening in this community."

Locals have broken down the shack where her body was found as they say unlawfully activities are common in the informal dwelling.

This is the third attack on a child in the area in the past month alone.

A nine-year-old girl was raped, set alight and left for dead a month ago.
