CAPE TOWN - Family members of five Lotus River residents killed in a shack fire on Monday said they are distraught.

The blaze gutted two backyard shacks in 5th Avenue during the early hours of Monday morning.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage.

Peter Jacobs, his wife Carmen, their two children and grandson died in the blaze.

A neighbouring shack was also damaged in the fire.

"I'm still in shock. It happened very quickly," said Jacobs's niece.

Some residents and family members sobbed as they packed up the family's belongings.

Others went through the rubble to see if anything could be salvaged.
