CAPE TOWN - Five family members, including two young boys, have burned to death in Lotus River in Cape Town.

A man, two women and the two boys died in the early hours of this morning when a fire started in an outside room of their house.

The city's Fire and Rescue Service's Theo Layne says, "They were two shacks in the back of a formal house that burnt. As a result a man, two women and two young males were killed."

Emotional family members and community members gathered at the scene of the shack fire this morning to mourn the deaths.

The fire broke out at around 1am this morning and left another three people homeless.

Neighbours told Eyewitness News they heard frantic screams coming from the structures this morning but were unable to help because of the severity of the blaze.

One of the deceased would have celebrated his third birthday this Friday.

Family members are now receiving counselling.
