JOHANNESBURG - Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has hit out at how the Premier Soccer League fixtures are scheduled following his side's 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates.

The Students took an early lead in the game through Sibusiso Vilakazi but saw their advantage whipped out after Helder Pelembe and Kermit Erasmus scored in the second half.

Hunt says his side wasn't involved in enough competitive fixtures to pose a real threat to Pirates.

"Playing fields are not level because we haven't played for seven weeks while Pirates have played four games so we got rusty and it showed tonight."

Pirates' interim coach Eric Tinkler was proud of how his team performed following a tough week, which saw head coach Roger De Sa resign from his post.

Tinkler saw the team's second half as a sign that they are going in the right direction.

"The second half was a better performance as the boys showed character after the hard week we've had. It's never easy when a coach leaves but the boys responded well and I'm extremely proud of them."

Tinkler has called in his charges to continue their winning form as they attempt to replicate the form that saw them into three finals at the beginning of the season.

"We explained the importance of them being professional in terms of their attitude, their application both in training and their upcoming games. I needed to build their confidence so I explained to them that we didn't get to three finals because we were lucky but we got there because we have quality."

Wits are currently number five on the Premier Soccer League log and Pirates are number six.
