CAPE TOWN - Some of Johannes Kana's family members say they will always be there to support Anene Booysen's family.

Kana was convicted late last year for the rape and murder of the Bredasdorp teenager.

Sunday marked one year since the 17-year-old was brutally raped, mutilated and left for dead at a construction site in the small Overberg town.

Kana's relatives sang along with other churchgoers during a special service for Booysen on Sunday.

His uncle, who shares the same name, says he was there to show support to Booysen's family.

"We, as the Kana family, want to be with them so that they can see we feel the same, just like them."

He says he shares their pain.

"We are here to support them. We will not stand far away from each other, but rather stand together."

Kana (22) is serving a double life sentence for Booysen's murder.
