CAPE TOWN - A special service in memory of slain teenager, Anene Booysen has been held in the Western Cape Town of Bredasdorp on Saturday afternoon.

Sunday will mark a year since Booysen was raped, mutilated and left for dead at a construction site.

Members of the Bredasdorp community gathered to pay tribute to Anene Booysen at the church of the Holy Spirit.

It was an intimate service.

Two white candles were lit and placed in front of the church.

Booysen's life was celebrated as people sang hymns and quietly prayed.

The community said the day was about remembering Booysen but was also about taking a stand against gender based violence.

Church minister and community leader Andre du Plooi said they condemn such crimes.

Meanwhile, a Cape Town woman who was gunned down while travelling to work in a taxi has been laid to rest.

The incident happened on Concert Boulevard in Retreat nearly two weeks ago.

Several people have died during alleged gang-related shootings across the city over the last few weeks.

The 26-year-old Lenzlin Mentor's funeral was held at the Roman Catholic Church in Retreat on Saturday.

Mentor was returning from her first day at work at a Pick n' Pay in Plumsted after maternity leave when she was shot last month.

The incident is believed to be linked to gang rivalry between the so called Junky Funky Kids and the Corner Boys.

The owner of the taxi, who was also shot and killed, was allegedly a member of the Corner Boys.

Meanwhile, Mentor's five-month-old baby daughter has been left in the care of her grandmother.
