Five nabbed in abalone bust
The suspects were caught with more than 18,000 abalone.
CAPE TOWN - Five people have been arrested after they were caught with abalone worth about R1.6 million, Cape Town Metro Police said on Thursday.
Officials received a tip-off about a perlemoen processing plant in Atlantis.
In total, authorities confiscated more than 18,000 abalone.
Metro police's Wayne le Roux says, "Police received information from a member of the public about some illegal activity taking place as a certain complex in Atlantis. Police contacted us and we conducted the operation with them. We managed to confiscate a huge amount of abalone."
Last week, Southern Cape police confiscated R800,000 worth of abalone.
A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.
