JOHANNESBURG - The ANC on Tuesday said it will only announce its candidate list for the upcoming elections once registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The ruling party held a briefing on Tuesday where it was widely expected to confirm President Jacob Zuma as its presidential candidate.

But the ANC said it was not quite ready to reveal its list.

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe spent time explaining the process of choosing candidates.

"The national list committee doesn't just rubberstamp what is brought to it. It discusses the balancing of the list and so forth."

He says the ANC will focus on strengthening local government, even if it means moving ministers to positions of mayors or councillors.

Mantashe says the theme for the 2014 polls is "together moving South Africa forward."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Saturday announced its candidate list.

Seven names on the list were referred to as 'confidential candidates'.

It is believed that journalists are among those who have made it onto the list.
