Extra security for gang-infested areas
Metro police will keep an eye on at least five areas which have been affected by gang violence this week.
CAPE TOWN - City of Cape Town metro police say they are maintaining a high presence in five areas that have been affected by gang violence.
These areas include Elsies River, Bonteheuwel and Mitchells Plain.
At least eight people have died in gang related shootings in these areas this week alone.
The metro police's Wayne le Roux says, "We've identified at least five problematic areas and we are trying to put operational plans in order to bring stability to the areas."
Earlier this week, two people were shot dead within hours of each other in Kalksteenfontein.
In another incident, on the first day of school, a six-year-old boy was wounded in a gang shooting in Elsies River.
He was due to start grade one, but was shot in the hand in front of the school building when an unknown gunman opened fire.
A 17-year-old was also wounded in the attack.
A man has since been arrested in connection with the shooting.
