Devland fire kills one

JOHANNESBURG - One person has died following a shack fire in Devland, in southern Johannesburg.

Authorities say the man was burnt beyond recognition when the blaze broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Johannesburg emergency services Robert Mulaudzi says, "One person died inside the shack. Our fire investigation team will investigate as to what might be the cause of the fire."

Meanwhile, Kya Sands ward councillor Matume Mafokwane is urging the public to donate aid to some 200 people who have been displaced by a fire in the area on Sunday morning.

At least 17 shacks have been destroyed by the blaze.

The cause of the blaze is also not yet known and no injuries have been reported.
