JOHANNESBURG - National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega congratulated officers who seized a rocket propelled grenade while making several arrests in downtown Johannesburg.

Despite scepticism from military experts, police say the grenade is worth an estimated R8 million on the black market.

At least two men were arrested on Wednesday night inside a car which was used to transport the grenade.

Officers also confiscated diamonds from three other men caught at the scene and are believed to be linked to the deal.

The police's Solomon Makgale says Phiyega is proud of the operation.

"She was pleased with the team because they reacted swiftly when they got the information and the arrest was made."

An investigation is underway to determine whether the diamonds were being used to purchase the weapon and what it may have been used for.

The two men arrested were a South African and a Mozambican and will appear in court on Monday.
