Annan: Don't chase immigrants away
Kofi Annan says countries should treat humans decently and come up with proper rules for managing migration.
DAVOS - Former United Nations (UN) Secretary General Kofi Annan has told the World Economic Forum in Davos that countries should not try and chase ships carrying immigrants away from their borders.
He's been speaking in a debate on immigration.
Annan's message is simple.
"Let's treat our fellow human beings decently and come up with proper rules for managing migration."
He further says he remembers a UN poster from several years ago.
"Show them an Einstein at the boarder trying to cross to a country with a sack of clothes and the caption was 'a sack of clothes is not the only thing the immigrant brings'".
His comments are going to be seen as strong criticism of Australia which has chased boats carrying immigrants to other countries.
