JOHANNESBURG - Additional police officers have been deployed to Durban Deep on the West Rand this morning to bring a violent protest under control.

Demonstrators have blocked off Main Reef and Randfontein Roads with rocks and burning tyres and witnesses claim a shot was also fired earlier.

The bullet apparently hit a man who died in hospital.

Residents say they protesting over the City of Joburg's failed promise to build RDP houses.

A woman who lives in the area and was trying to get to work says, "They were chasing us and we couldn't go past and the people who arrived were screaming and shouting and one of the rioters took out a gun and fired a shot."

Meanwhile, police are also keeping a close eye on protesters in Alexandra.

Residents have gathered at a local clinic protesting over apparent evictions.

"I'm involved in the protest because I'm part of the people who have been threatened to be evicted," says a local man.
