CAPE TOWN - Website Goal.com reports that Manchester United has rejected a fresh approach from Chelsea to sign star striker Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea's latest attempt to land Rooney comes as United step up their attempt to prise £40 million-rated midfielder Juan Mata from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are thought to be willing to pay £30m for Rooney in the January transfer window.

United remain adamant that they will not sell Rooney to Chelsea, who they regard as rivals for a Champions League place, or to any other club for that matter.

But the Red Devils may have their hand forced by Rooney's refusal to sign a new contract at the club with only 17 months left on his current deal.

United manager David Moyes is confident he can convince Rooney to sign an extension, but if the situation was to remain unchanged, United would either need to cash in on their prized asset soon or risk losing him for free at the end of next season.

A fit again Rooney is expected to be part of the United squad to face Sunderland tonight in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final, where they are looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit to book a place in the final against neighbour Manchester City next month.
