JOHANNESBURG - Sports agent Neil Jankelowitz has defended his client Moeneeb Josephs who was singled out by Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula after Bafana crashed out of the 2014 Orange African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Mbalula was quoted as saying "Josephs was playing with the team, but he added up a whole lot of mess".

Jankelowitz says the Bidvest goalkeeper was dejected after hearing the minister's comments about his performance.

"We have been Moeneeb's agent for the past 12 years and we've looked after the boy for many years, and to be honest, the only word I could use is dejected and pretty shocked."

"Apart from his actual performance, he's a true South African who's deeply passionate about representing the country and has been for many years. He's a proud South African and he comes from a very rough background. So I think he has done an amazing job as a South African footballer."

On Tuesday, Mbalula said he didn't mind if calling Bafana "a bunch of losers and useless individuals" has made him unpopular.

Mbalula further said Bafana's group stage elimination from the CHAN represented a monumental crisis for the national soccer team.
