Rape victim (9) fights for her life
The nine-year-old Delft girl was raped, set alight and left for dead.
She remains in a critical, but stable condition and medical staff continue to monitor her closely.
Health Department spokesperson Angelique Jordaan says, "The girl's condition remains unchanged. She has extensive burn wounds to her body."
Community members found the girl lying near the R300 highway after she was reported missing at the weekend.
A 27-year-old suspect has since been arrested for the attack and made a brief appearance in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the case against the suspect will receive top priority.
The man faces charges of attempted murder, rape, sexual assault and abduction.
The NPA's Eric Ntabazalila says, "One of the things that we need to confirm is that he gave an address in Philippi, but several people have come forward saying he has been seen in Delft several times. If he applies for bail, we will oppose it."
The case has been postponed and resumes on 28 January.
