Coetzee leads at Doha Masters

South African George Coetzee tops the first-round leaderboard at the Qatar Masters.

George Coetzee shot an 8-under 64 in Round 1 of the Qatar Masters.

JOHANNESBURG - South African George Coetzee leads the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters after shooting an 8-under par 64 in the first round at the Doha Golf Club.

Coetzee says that despite his opening round lead he is not getting carried away.

"There's a lot of luck involved in this game, especially the way I played in that last round. I think I had 21 putts with a 3 putt, so I am hitting the ball better."

Ernie Els ended day one 5-under after shooting a solid 67, including holing a bunker shot on the 18th for eagle. Els admitted that his round could not have finished any better.

"That was a dream finish. To hole a bunker shot for eagle on the last always puts a smile on your face. I played quite nicely all day. I didn't quite get the roll on some of my putts, but the one on the last really made up for everything."
