CAPE TOWN - A 29-year-old Grassy Park mother faces a charge of neglect after she allegedly left her 18-month-old son home alone when their shack caught alight.

The physically challenged toddler died in the blaze, which gutted his home in the Phumlani Village informal settlement on Sunday evening.

Seven others have also been affected by the fire.

The police's Frederick van Wyk says, "It's believed the mother of the child was not at home at the time of the fatal incident. The cause of the fire, which led to the death of the child, is still being investigated. The mother is still in custody."
