No Bok contract for Matfield

CAPE TOWN - South African Rugby Union (Saru) CEO Jurie Roux says the national rugby body has not approached Victor Matfield about a possible Springbok contract.

Although the 36-year-old lock's return to playing is still to be confirmed by the Bulls or SA Rugby, it's understood that negotiations are at an advanced stage.

But Roux says they've not been in discussion with Matfield at all.

"He definitely has not been offered a contract from Saru. Currently, it's between the Bulls and Victor Matfield. Victor will have to prove himself through playing with the Bulls and getting into the Super Rugby team. After that, if he's confident and successful enough, it's dependent on the selectors and the coach whether they select him for the Springbok team or not."

Roux says offering Victor Matfield a Springbok contract at this stage would be completely unfair, and like any other player, Matfield will have to prove he's worthy of a Bok recall.

"At the moment it would be very difficult to give a contract to someone who hasn't played for a year and a half. It probably would be a bit of a risk to do that. But if Victor proves himself and the coach thinks he's good enough, it's the coach's prerogative as to whether he will select him or not."
