CAPE TOWN - Delft father Zolani Malanga, who allegedly killed his 18-month-old son by burying him alive, will remain in custody until his bail hearing on Monday next week.

Malanga (33) briefly appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Monday following the discovery of his son Zondre Parks's body in his shack nearly two weeks ago.

The state believes he should not be granted bail.

Malanga apparently placed a pillow over the child's head before he covered him with sand.

He also reportedly prepared a meal for his son prior to the incident.

It's not yet clear what caused him to snap on 9 January. But he now faces a charge of murder.

Malanga left the courtroom smiling on Monday.
