Bakkies backs Matfield's return
Bakkies Botha says he would welcome Victor Matfield's return to the rugby field.
JOHANNESBURG - Springbok lock Bakkies Botha has added his voice to those who are welcoming Victor Matfield's return to the rugby field.
Speaking to Sports Talk from his home in Toulon, France, Botha says that he hasn't spoken to Matfield specifically about the development, but is delighted at the news of his return.
"We call each other 'The Combo', so I'm just happy to see 'The Combo' back in the mix," he says.
Botha, capped 78 times for the Springboks, formed a formidable partnership with Matfield both for the Bulls and for the national team.
He says that the 36-year-old's return is well thought out.
"For me especially, Victor is the type of player who always brings something positive to a team. I think that there's a bigger picture to bring Victor back as a player. The way he thinks about rugby and the game itself, any team can benefit from that.
"I'm happy to see that the Bulls are going to bring him back in the Super 15. Victor's the type of guy who loves challenges and it's definitely a challenge for him to come back."
Matfield's return is still to be confirmed by the Bulls, or SA Rugby, with negotiations understood to be at an advanced stage.
Botha says that while there will be negative comments about his return, there's much to gain from his return.
"We must look at the positives and the whole story of Victor's return. I'm looking forward to seeing the big man on the pitch and definitely I believe that he can make a difference wherever he goes."
