Valhalla fire committee to meet mayor
Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille will meet with the committee on Monday evening at half past seven.
CAPE TOWN - A committee set up to assist Valhalla Park fire victims says it plans to meet with Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille on Monday.
A fire that swept through the Agste Laan Informal Settlement just two days before Christmas left about 1,400 people homeless.
The City of Cape Town has since provided residents with disaster relief, food and material to rebuild their structures.
The community however isn't satisfied and says instead of portable toilets, stand-pipes and zinc sheets to rebuild their homes, they want brick and cement houses and adequate sanitation.
Committee coordinator Sulyman Stellenboom says the community has refrained from protesting until it receives a response from De Lille.
"The meeting scheduled for tomorrow evening at half past seven, where the mayor will send transport to pick up the committee. What we want out of the meeting is for example, there's no service delivery. Service delivery is like a joke."
