Amcu strike begins on Thursday
The union has decided to strike at Anglo American Platinum after meeting with its members on Sunday.
JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members in Rustenburg have voted to go on strike at Anglo American Platinum.
More than 10,000 miners gathered at the Olympia stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday for a central mass meeting on proposed strike action for higher wages.
Amcu has already secured a certificate of non-resolution from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) following unsuccessful talks with mine bosses last year.
Simultaneous strikes at Amplats, Lonmin and Impala Platinum by the powerhouse union now seem inevitable.
Amcu's Treasurer General Jimmy Gama says the decision to strike was taken with a show of hands.
"Straight hours will be served tomorrow and the strike will start on Thursday."
