Steyn to play inside centre

Jake White says Francois Steyn will play at number 12 for the Sharks.

JOHANNESBURG - Francois Steyn will play the 2014 season for the Sharks exclusively at inside centre, according to director of rugby Jake White.

The move will see Steyn in direct competition with Springbok captain Jean de Villiers and Bulls youngster Jan Serfontein for a place in the Springbok starting fifteen. Steyn's versatility to cover at fullback will also stand in his favour.

Steyn played inside centre for White during the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and White says it's where he is most valuable to the team.

"Francois will play 12 for us because that's where I think his best position is for us, and I think it's the best position he plays. More importantly, I think the combination between him and Pat Lambie will be a massive strength for us as a group. He won't be shifted around, he'll play at number 12. That doesn't mean that he might not finish a game somewhere else if we want to blood someone else in the 12 jersey."
