CAPE TOWN - Tourists and locals have been flocking to Table Mountain in their thousands, resulting in visitor numbers to the iconic landmark reaching record highs.

More than 120,000 local and international visitors took the Table Mountain cable car during December alone.

Visitor numbers increased by two percent compared to the same time in 2012.

Table Mountain's Collette van Aswegen says, "December 2013 certainly marks a record year for the cableway."

The city's Grant Pascoe says other tourist attractions during the festive season included Cape Point and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

"The V&A Waterfront has been phenomenal this year. So has Table Mountain and the Cape Point Nature Reserve has seen an increase. We are a bit disappointed with Robben Island because there has been a bit of decrease in the numbers, but we are very encouraged by the overall numbers that we've seen coming into the city."
