CAPE TOWN - AgriWescape says while damage assessments at farms in the central Karoo have not yet been finalised, the total damages tallied thus far come to about R300 million.

The Buffels River in Laingsburg burst its banks when heavy rains and hailstorms lashed the area last week.

Roads, crops and infrastructure suffered major damage.

Agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg visited some farms today to start assessments while some farmers have lost thousands of rands due to damaged crops, others have lost everything.

AgriWescape's Carl Opperman says damage assessments are due to continue.

"The impact of the floods in the Western Cape has far-reaching consequences and we will know the full impact in a few week's time."
