Cele 'hitman' arrested
The 24-year-old suspect will reappear in court on Monday on charges of extortion and intimidation.
CAPE TOWN - A Nigerian man who claims to be a hitman hired to kill former national police commissioner Bheki Cele has been arrested in Cape Town.
It is alleged he started making threatening phone calls to the former top cop in December and extorted money from him.
The 24-year-old suspect told Cele he would spare his life in exchange for R4,000.
KwaZulu-Natal police tracked him down in Cape Town last weekend.
The police's Jay Naicker says he appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court earlier this week.
"The Nigerian national appeared at the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of extortion and intimidation. He will reappear in court on Monday."
