New uniforms for underprivileged learners
Children starting school were presented with new school uniforms as part of the Bana Pele Project.
JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of underprivileged school pupils have been the recipients of new uniforms on their first day of school, as part of the Gauteng government's Bana Pele Project.
About 100 pupils at the Tiyelelani Secondary School have benefitted from this project.
Dozens of pupils stood proudly with their new socks, polished black shoes and neatly knotted ties.
Recipients of new school uniforms say they are grateful.
One boy says, "It feels nice because I didn't have the money to go and purchase a uniform."
A young girl says, "I think it's good and I am very excited."
The school's principal says, "We've got children who are from destitute families. Giving these children a uniform brings back their human dignity because they become equal to other learners. They're happy."
About 100 pupils at the school benefited from the project.
