CAPE TOWN - A Northern Cape father accused of his one-year-old son's murder will make his first appearance in court in Kimberley today.

The 27-year-old father is due to appear in the Galeshewe Magistrates Court on a charge of murder.

Little Thabang Mokwena's charred corpse was found dumped in the township on Sunday, just one day after his father reported him missing.

Community members discovered the child's body near his home.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergio Kock says, "Any crimes against women and children are a high priority to the South African Police Service. We're condemning this type of crime and will make sure no stone is left unturned during this investigation."

In the same area late last year, a six-week-old baby was raped, allegedly by her uncle.
