JOHANNESBURG - John Smit believes that Victor Matfield has the ability to make a successful return to rugby, after reports emerged that the former Springbok lock was considering reversing his decision to retire.

Speculation is rife that Matfield will make a return to the game with the Blue Bulls for the upcoming Super Rugby campaign.

The goal for Matfield is apparently to force his way into Bok coach Heyneke Meyer's plans for the World Cup in 2015.

Smit says that Matfield's dedication to the game would result in a successful return for the former lock.

"If he decides that coming back to play the game is what he wants, I'm pretty sure that Victor will be running in front at the fitness sessions and be at the front of the queue for conditioning. He'll make sure that he's prepared, and I've never met someone more meticulous than him. If a return is something that he wants, I'll back him wholeheartedly to do it successfully."
