JOHANNESBURG - The North West Legislature has set up a special subcommittee to investigate the purchase of a R1.3 million car for the province's premier, Thandi Modise.

The oversight committee has expressed concern about what it calls possible "reckless spending by the executive" during a time when the economy is under severe pressure.

Modise's office has defended the purchase of the luxury BMW 750i saying it's in line with guidelines prescribed by the ministerial handbook.

The committee is expected to investigate exactly when the car was bought and interview every official involved.

It's been given two weeks to wrap up its work.
