Little Jasmin to be cremated
Family and friends will gather for a private cremation ceremony in Benoni today.
JOHANNESBURG - A private cremation service will be held for rape and murder victim Jasmin Pretorius in Benoni today.
Jasmin was allegedly raped and murdered by her 23-year-old uncle.
Her body was found under a bed in her father's flat almost two weeks ago
Several mourners attended the four-year-old girl's funeral held at a church in Brakpan yesterday.
Jasmin's emotionally drained family says the little girl united the country and refocused the awareness of violence against children.
Her grandfather Colin Bam says he is proud of Jasmin's mother, Sasha-Lee Bam, who has been brave throughout this difficult time.
Sasha-Lee received several death threats from community members accusing her of neglecting her daughter.
Bam says at first he wanted to punish the accused, but has now found it in his heart to forgive him instead.
"I've forgiven him and made peace, I can't imagine hurting this guy because it would be a double whammy."
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court next week .
At the same time, Jasmin's family says she has not died in vain and has pleaded with parents to look after their children.
Tons of donated soft toys for the victim will be given to the rape crisis centre in Boksburg as requested by her six-year-old sister.
Flowers and soft toys were laid in front of the flat where the crime took place, and more were donated during the funeral service held at the Light House Church.
Bam added that next week, several bikers will deliver the toys to rape victims who need the comfort.
"If I could counsel the families and tell them how to get through it the way I did, I'm sure I could help many people in that aspect."
