Heavy rains force residents to skip work
Rivers burst their banks after heavy torrential downpours in the Laingsburg area.
CAPE TOWN - Scores of Laingsburg residents missed work on Wednesday after heavy rains lashed the area over the last 48 hours.
The N1, which runs through the town, also had to be closed due to flooding earlier in the day.
Rivers burst their banks after heavy torrential downpours.
A section of the N1 just outside the town has been badly damaged.
According to a Laingsburg resident, the rain reminded him of the deadly 1981 floods.
At least 104 people died and the town was left devastated.
This resident says water pipes have also been damaged, cutting off water supplies to many homes and businesses.
"Many people are worried that history will repeat itself in Laingsburg."
Disaster management officials say while no deaths or injuries have been reported, they will remain on high alert.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has issued a warning for heavy rainfall over the next few days.
The city's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says, "We have placed disaster response teams on standby."
